The Passionate Collector
The first thing you noticed in Bridget Schwartz's Oakland, California, apartment is its playful mix of colors. The living room is painted lavender, the dining room mint green, and the bedroom a rosy pink. All are decorated with vibrant furnishings.

To balance the lavender walls and yellow sofa, Bridget uses rich blues and dark reds. Vintage metal-frame chairs have been reupholstered in green velvet and ikat fabric. A mid-century modern tulip tape sits under and Italian chandelier. Inspire by travels of yore, a brass-clad trunk adds a touch of glamour and stylish storage. Lacework, solid crochet, wrapped yarn, and tassels memorialize Bridget's pst relationship. A vintage Marimenko rose-pattern pillow adds a bold contrast to the dark blue chair. Silver and turquoise candlesticks perch on a carved sideboard Bridget brought back from a trip to Goa in western India. A chaise lounge, upholstered in fabric from Jaipur, and a desk provide a den-like space for working and relaxing. A burled-wood bar by midcentury-modern master designer Milo Baughman makes a dramatic statement, while connecting the living and dining rooms. The galley kitchen offers a loosely defined retro vibe. The Chinese bamboo armoire is covered with an Oriental print. In the hallway, a rare1960s poster, titled To keep things interesting, Bridget regularly rotates her wall art. A vintage, hammered-copper pitcher makes a fitting vase.

Feeling Groovy
This Tennessee cottage combines living space and free-spirited guest quarters under one roof.

A tiered hanging vegetable basket is repurposed as a plant holder.
The living room features an original wood burning fireplace.Using a piece of plywood and black tape, Savannah channeled a Navarho when artwork. A try-level glass and metal coffee table provides lots of storage but is visually invisible. A tapestry, gauzy fabric and a star light fixture create dreamy canopy. A decorative animal skull watches over the Navaho artwork created by Savanah. Hung from the ceiling, white mesh fabric and vintage fringed shawls create a canopy in the guest bedroom. Geometric shapes unite a gallery wall of favorite items. Chairs reupholstered with a banana leaf fabric keep company to a refinished thrift store table. A portrait of singer Stevie Nicks breaks up the graphic wallpaper. Blue and green accessories set the tone for the bedroom. Against a black wall, a tiger-maple hutch takes on a jewel-like glow. A large-scale leafy duvet set and a low rattan table bring a a tropical vibe to the bedroom. Savannah and Casey embrace brilliant colors throughout their home. On the second floor landing, an extra sleeping area was created by adding a wall.

Patterns of Behaviour
Its' all in a day's work for a decorative artist who fills her home with colorful stencil projects and global goods.

A large cabinet holds Debbie's glass art and features more stencil work. An oversize tassel hangs over a vintage Kantha throw. A chalkboard keeps track of artistic projects. Debbie transformed a store fixture with paint, metal mesh panels and handcrafted knobs. A mix of linens and objects from far-away-lands give the guest room a carefree caravan vibe. Metallic finishes transform an old dresser into a unique vanity. Teal velvet adds panache to a vintage wicker armchair. The silver sequin basket was found on a trip to Marrakech. A beaded horse keeps watch over a handmade platter and glass floats. A stardust mirror over a pattern of gold-foil dots make a striking focal point A visit to the palace of Versailles inspired this work of art glass. Bed with teal duvet, silk pillows and Mongolian lam throw. Debbie keeps the tools of her trade neatly and prettily organized. An Egyptian crystal chandelier unites with a vintage door and garden chair.

Tropical Oasis
Withs colourful exterior, Key West-style architecture and it's tropical foliage, it's hard to miss the hideaway of East Coast designer and now full-time Florida resident Michele Mancini.

Antique frames showcase swatches of Michele's nostalgic designs. McCoy vases hold greenery collected from the garden. With its fruit-color walls and trim the kitchen sizzles Unique lamps, animal prints and floral textiles give the living room its cozy tropical feel. The narrow kitchen offers a convenient breakfast bar \. The key to Michael's successful decorating strategy lies in her well-balanced imaginative arrangements, Hula figurines and tropical flowers and fabrics recall Havana and Hawaii.
Only the bedroom shows more restraint with its subdued palette.

Phoenix Rising
An abandoned Arizona home takes flight with mid-century modern furnishings and a major makeover.

Ryan found the Sputnik chandelier at an estate sale. The copper fireplace flue panel was “aged” to contrast with new earthy mosaic tiles. A leather armchair is accentuated with a colorful pillow with a geometric pattern. The bedroom’s décor—which includes items culled from Modern Manor, as well as estate sale and Craigslist, trends toward cheerful tones. Prized possessions line built in shelves that frame a window niche. Keeping faithful to the mid-century mantra of creating beauty from
an amalgam of things you love, the couple chose a centuries-old French pastry counter as the kitchen’s focal point. The corner fireplace is the stand-out feature in Kylie and Ryan Durkin’s great room. Original rectangular block poured-concrete walls lend the space an organic feel. A stained-glass window, one of a pair the Durkins bought on Craigslist, sits atop an art-deco chest. On display are choice examples of Italian pottery, including a Rimini blue bull by Aldo Londi for Bitossi. The kitchen walls are wallows with beveled subway tiles. A recess niche above the farmhouse sink features patterned tiles and a ledge. Ryan and Kylie share a quiet moment in the garden with their two boys, Sawyer and River, and their Yorkshire terrier, Ollie. A handsome vintage turquoise pottery is giving place of honor in the kitchen Attributed to pioneering modernist designer Harvey Probber, the round inlay coffee table acts as a stage for cobalt blue candlesticks and a Bitossi bowl. The remodeled bathroom's focal point is a freestanding bathtub adjacent to the glassed-in shower
